A jewel of Gothic architecture and the necropolis of French kings and queens, the Basilica Cathedral of Saint-Denis continues its spectacular transformation with the reconstruction of its tower and north spire. Through ""La Fabrique de la flèche" (the spire factory), one of Europe's largest heritage restoration projects becomes a unique immersive experience, blending history, expertise, and innovation.
For over 170 years, the Basilica of Saint-Denis has been without its tower and north spire. The spire, which once reached a height of 90 meters, was struck by lightning in 1837, weakening its structure. After repairs, further storms between 1842 and 1845 definitively endangered the spire, leading to its demolition in 1846. The dismantling was completed in 1847 under the direction of the architect Viollet-le-Duc.
This reconstruction offers a unique opportunity to raise awareness among visitors of the historical and artistic richness of the Saint-Denis Basilica Cathedral, which houses the tombs of the kings and queens of France. The objective is twofold: firstly, to restore the monument to its architectural integrity, which makes it one of the principal masterpieces of Gothic architecture; and secondly, to promote the transmission of the builders' crafts while fostering a better understanding of the challenges faced by architects.

FROM THE ROYAL NECROPOLIS TO THE SPIRE FACTORY
It is within this dual framework that, since October 17, 2025, a unique route allows visitors to discover the royal necropolis and the construction site of La Fabrique de la flèche (the spire factory) located at the foot of the monument. This new space offers an immersive and innovative experience at the heart of the history and expertise that brought the Saint-Denis Basilica-Cathedral to life.

The visit begins with the royal necropolis, with its unique collection of 70 recumbent effigies of French kings and queens, its Gothic architecture and a remarkable program of stained glass windows, before continuing to the spire factory, a true heritage laboratory that presents the fascinating world of builders past and present: craftsmen's lodges, workshops, permanent exhibition, 360° cinema, virtual reality and children's area.
By offering the opportunity to discover the behind-the-scenes aspects of the reconstruction, the spire factory is a plunge into the heart of one of the largest heritage construction sites in Europe!
